Podcamp Topeka is a social media unconference held at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library. This year it's Oct. 22 and a value at just $10. That includes a keynote speech by Ben Smith, principal at Social:IRL, a bootique social media business in Lawrence, KS. Local businesses, organizations and individuals with an interest in social media, nontraditional media and emerging technologies will get value out of a day spent at Podcamp Topeka.

Banned Bookmobile Read-Out Road Trip
The Library's Bookmobile hit the road on September 28 for the Read-Out Road Trip to three Skokie schools. Students at McCracken Middle School, East Prairie School, and Bessie Rhodes Magnet School of Global Studies played Banned Book Bingo and read passages from banned and challenged books. Each school also received a box of banned books purchased by Skokie Public Library with grant funds received from the American Library Association's Judith Krug Foundation.

The Birmingham Public Library hosts Bards & Brews, the popular monthly poetry slam/beer tasting at the Central Library emceed by poetry slam events director Brian "Voice Porter" Hawkins.
September's Bards & Brews was held Friday the 16th as part of the line-up for the first annual Eat Drink Read Write Festival http://www.bplonline.org/eatdrinkfest. The September event featured the winners of past Bards & Brews slams. The warm-up poets performed original poems related to food and drink. Free the Hops (FTH) provided information about craft beers. Back Forty Beer Company and Lazy Magnolia Brewing Company provided beer for sampling. Continental Bakery/Chez Lulu donated refreshments.
