Joy Harsh, Abilene Zoo Educator, came out for her last stop at the Abilene Public Library by visiting the South Branch location. With her, she brought an assistant, Andrew, and two special animal guest friends to teach kids about animals and even let them touch some of them. The featured animals were Rufus, a 5-year-old alligator and Jojo, a 10-year-old Ball Python. Zoo Fun programs are popular events for kids during the Summer Reading Clubs.

For week 33 of our Kansas sesquicentennial video series we're featuring our Chinese pewter collection. Pewter is a metal alloy consisting primarily of tin and small amounts of other metals like lead and copper, although today, most pewter is manufactured lead-free. "The history of tin goes back to the Sumerians who produced bronze (a copper-tin alloy) nearly 4500 years ago. The oldest known pewter is about 3500 years old and comes from Egypt. Pewter from China dates back at least 2000 years." [1]

For week 32 of our Kansas sesquicentennial video series, we're staying local and featuring artist and Menninger Clinic art therapy pioneer, Mary Huntoon.

Huntoon was a 1916 graduate of Topeka High School. She earned her Arts Bachelor degree from Washburn College, studied at the Art Students League in New York for six years and later spent five years in Paris. She had her first solo exhibition in the Sacre du Printemps gallery in Paris in the 1920s. Huntoon's work is also in the collection of the National Museum of Women in the Arts.

For week 31 of our Kansas sesquicentennial series we're looking west to Manhattan, home to renowned ceramist and Distinguished Professor of Ceramics at Kansas State University, Yoshiro Ikeda.

Ikeda is a Japanese immigrant whose family settled in Portland when he was teenager. He earned his bachelor's degree in painting from Portland State University. "Throughout my artistic career, I have drawn inspiration and ideas from my surroundings and experiences. My works have reflected the organic aspects of nature, the ever-changing weather, and the art of dancing. Form and surface are woven together, creating an endless line of movement," says Ikeda.

What were the earliest dinosaurs like? Find out at our traveling exhibit, Origins: The Dawn of Dinosaurs, comes to the Library. Get a glimpse of early Triassic life – 225 million years ago – when the two earliest dinosaurs, Eoraptor and Herrerasaurus, thrived. The dinosaurs "come to life" in this exhibit which paints a picture of their world using:
• Life-size flesh models
• Replica skeletons
• Original fossil wood and volcanic ash
• Expedition equipment and images from the discovery site in Argentina
• A hands-on dinosaur silhouette rubbing table
• A video theatre tent showing Fragments of Time DVD

The exhibit, which was created by Project Exploration, will be in the Hendrickson Room from July 8–29. Hours are Monday–Friday 9 a.m.–9 p.m.; Saturday 9 a.m.–5 p.m. and Sunday noon–5 p.m. Drop in during these hours; there's no registration. The exhibit is free and is generously sponsored by the Friends of the Library.
