Narrator: In 2010, the Library Journal recognized the Birmingham Public Library as a star library for the year. This prestigious publication recognized what Birmingham residents have known for years: that the city of Birmingham has a prized possession in its library system.

Since its inception in 1886, the Birmingham Public Library (BPL) has built or accessioned nineteen branches in nearly every corner of the city and offered services to hundreds of thousands of people every year. In the previous year, we offered 2,138
programs to the public with a total attendance of 57,258. Incredibly, the library accommodated over 1.9 million people in its 19 locations.

Despite the 48% cut to BPL's materials' budget, the library still hosted a world-class summer reading program and reopened the Powderly and East Lake locations to new renovations. Library patrons checked out over half a million items throughout the year and spent over 20 million minutes using library computers.

It was a busy year and a great year and in the first BPL Campaign, patrons graciously donated approximately $26,000 to help purchase library materials.

BPL continues to honor its mission statement, which is to provide the highest quality library service to our citizens for life long learning, cultural enrichment and enjoyment.
